Q In Chinua Achebe’s,Things Fall Apart, we can see she interrogates globalization and intersections through gender and culture. In Okonokwo’s culture men are above women and there's a lot of toxic masculinity in the culture. They also depend on their belief system a lot. They listen to whatever the “oracle” says and they follow exactly what the rules say no matter how radical it is. For example, Okonokwo did not question having to kill his own son. So when Christians come to town and they take in those who are outcasted by the societies harsh and strict rules, people start changing some of their beliefs. They respect the church and Cristians to take over the town and impose their own rules and customs. We can see this intersectionality evolve when Christians don't want people of the town to believe in both Chrisitanity and the Igbo beliefs. For example, they would not accept them if they did not shave their hair but the people believed that they would die if they shaved it off so they were scared. As we can see, there was issues happening with the intersection of religions and beliefs. Okonkwo and other people from the clans are mad that they white men are in their town. They cannot understand why these people say that their customs are bad even though they don't even know their language much less their customs. We see this happening in globalization now. Where people are moving to places with different cultures and generations are losing the languages. So those who know the language sometimes assume that those who don't know the language, don't know anything about the culture either. The clans people believe that they are taking their people and separating them apart. So later on they decided to destroy the church which caused them to be imprisoned, they were threatened to be killed if they did not pay a bail. After they were set free, there was a meeting for the clans where Okonowo realized that they were not going to war against the white men and he became very frustrated that he even killed one of their messengers. After, Okonowo took his own life. This showed us the negative effects that colonization brought, which not only physically killed people but killed people from the inside enough for them to prefer death.
